Ukulele Lessons

What do you learn in your ukulele lessons?

We do not treat each student the same in terms of what we teach.  A 9-year old taking ukulele lessons for the first time will have a very different course of study than a 59-year old who is brushing up his skills.  Here at the Academy, we customize each lesson to achieve your personal goals.  You will learn sight reading, improvisation, rhythm, ear training, music theory, and performing skills, all while playing your favorite songs and riffs!

Beginning students will learn:

Instrument anatomy (names of parts, strings, frets, etc)
How single notes combine into chords (melody/harmony)
Sight reading (melodies/harmony)
How to use your piano music reading skills to read guitar/ukulele music (This  helps with theory lessons and is especially beneficial for students who  already take piano)

Students often get the chance to play along with other musicians, whether in duets or ensembles.  This helps teach rhythm, listening skills, cooperation, and the ability to work with others… and you’ll have a lot of fun making music with others!  Our instructors have connections to area ukulele groups and clinics, which means that there are upcoming opportunities for you to get involved.

Our instructors are experienced, well-qualified, and versatile.  They teach all styles of music, whether folk, rock, jazz, blues, sacred, or classical ukulele.

Ukulele lessons for children

Ukulele lessons are recommended for ages 5 and up.  Ukulele is a great starter instrument for children who are interested in learning to play guitar.  If you have a 5 – 8 year-old child who wants to play guitar, we would recommend starting with either ukulele lessons or with a student size (3/4) guitar.  Ukulele and guitar are both played the same way, but are simply tuned differently.  The smaller instruments are easier on small kids’ hands, and make the transition simple when they graduate to a full-sized instrument.

Our ukulele lessons are perfect for your child.  Whether they want to play folk tunes, Beatles, or Jason Mraz, we can guide them through the skills of reading music, improvisation, playing by ear, music theory, and performing.  If you are a beginning ukulele student, you will likely start by learning single notes, then build up to basic chords.  From there, the sky is the limit!

Adult Ukulele Lessons

Whether you are preparing for a college audition, or just learning because it’s been on your bucket list for years, we work with you to accomplish your personal goals.  Your teacher will assist you in learning your favorite music, while gaining skills in sight reading, ear training, improvisation, music theory, and performing.  If you are an adult ukulele student, you will master the basic mechanics of ukulele playing while focusing on the repertoire you’d like to learn.  As a beginning ukulele student, you will  usually start by learning single notes, then build up to basic chords.  Often, adults will want to learn traditional or favorite songs as part of their lessons.  We’d love to help you with this!

If you are a senior and are looking for music lessons as a fun challenge, you’ve come to the right place!  Ukulele lessons are a great way to keep you busy, learning, growing, and stimulating the brain.

What types of ukulele do you teach?

We offer lessons in soprano ukulele, tenor ukulele, and baritone ukulele.

Who is my instructor?

All of our teachers have either college degrees in music or extensive performance/teaching experience.  We choose our instructors for their warm personalities.  Our teachers work well with both children and adults, and are dedicated to helping you achieve your goals.  They are friendly, patient, and strive to get to know each student and their parent on a personal level.  Our teachers also have experience in teaching non-traditional students, such as students with special needs and abilities.

Can you help me sing and play at the same time?

Yes!  Our instructors can help you combine the rhythm of singing and strumming to facilitate accompaniment for voice.  These singing+playing lessons are not formal vocal instruction, but work with the rhythm and mechanics of singing as you play the ukulele.  We assist you in building the coordination needed for this skill.  If you would like dedicated vocal lessons, please visit our Voice Lessons page here.
